“We are like islands in the sea, separate on the surface but connected in the deep.” - William James
“We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things, humanity will not find peace.” - Albert Schweitzer

With social media and television, we have an increased awareness of so much strife and suffering that occurs all over this planet.
“Halcyon Days,” usually means looking back to a time that we may imagine was more peaceful and compassionate. But for you, I hope this painting helps you to look forward to the reality of that.
There are many animals that depend on our stewardship for their survival. One of those is the tiger. An animal that is gorgeous, powerful and majestic, and also very vulnerable to our actions.
A portion of the sale of this painting will benefit, Save Tigers Now, a World Wildlife Fund campaign, whose mission is to double the current tiger population by 2022.

This painting is part of a series of symbolism paintings with raptors, oversized eggs, snakes and prehistoric imagery. Eggs represent what we hold precious and dear: our children, our loved ones, the earth, and here, they are larger than life to magnify the sense of importance they have to us. The raptor, in this case, a Red-tailed Hawk, Buteo jamaicensis, is you, me, us —- protecting the egg.
I love the raw and direct beauty of prehistoric paintings. In these paintings, I use a stylistic representation of them to symbolize the fight for survival through the millennia.
About my painting style... there are often aura-like outlines to symbolize energy fields and halos to represent the spirit. Gold and silver watercolors or gouache are my nod to the beautiful illuminated Medieval manuscripts and Persian paintings that have inspired me to want to paint since I was a teenager. Everything I do in a painting is with the deep hope that it evokes in you an experience of the beauty, magic and mystery of life.

This painting is a tribute to Dame Daphne Sheldrick.
Part of the proceeds of its sale will be donated to The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
Professionally framed by Prentice Gallery in wood molding, anti-reflective glass and acid-free, mat board.
This is a tribute to Dame Daphne Sheldrick, who died in 2018. She was the matriarch of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) in Kenya. They are, “Best known for their work to protect elephants, the SWT operates the most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world.” It breaks my heart that they get orphaned at all - mostly from the actions of humans.
When she was asked what she admired about elephants,in a 60 minutes interview, she answered, “Their tremendous capacity for caring is, I think, perhaps the most amazing thing about them,” adding, “They have all of the best attributes of us humans and not very many of the bad.”
I, myself, felt an intense widening of my heart for the animal world after reading, “Elephant Memories: Thirteen Years in the Life of an Animal Family,” by Cynthia Moss. They, and I can see now, all animals are deeply feeling beings. I want to share with you their story and beauty through art like this painting.

This is an allegorical painting about compassion and conservation, death and renewal.
I was driving through Chinatown in San Francisco one afternoon when traffic was stopped by a funeral procession. Walking alongside the hearse was a man, perhaps a brother, perhaps a friend, holding a poster-sized photograph of the deceased. I was struck by this vision of the hearse encapsulating the finality of his death juxtaposed with a photo of him, appearing alive, young and vibrant.
That experience was the inspiration for this painting of the last mermaid, ‘Ultimum syreni,’ showing an image of the last mermaid mounted onto a Chinese scroll. She represents the last of anything, any animal, any plant, any person. Something that you can't get back. A frozen image of something, beautiful, mysterious and phenomenal, but gone forever.
The other objects in this still-life are symbolic for renewal and hope (the eggs), our unconscious (the nautilus), and death (the candle), and how each of these play a role in the life and extinction of a species.

While traveling on a sunny June day, a few years ago, I walked into a spiritual goods store. It was very dark inside; partly because it was so sunny outside and partly because there were no overhead lights inside. I meandered through the circuitous walkways of goods, and halfway through this seemingly endless space, I stepped through a side door to feel the sunlight on my face. The sun shown bright from above and I blinked to realize I was in a courtyard surrounded by statues of Buddha, Vishnu, Kuan Yin and Ganesh. In the center of the yard, the sun reflected up from a pond. Silence
The fish danced round and round the lotus;
the colors and lights mesmerized.
