“We are like islands in the sea, separate on the surface but connected in the deep.” - William James
“We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things, humanity will not find peace.” - Albert Schweitzer

It’s an early morning in the heat of summer.
The sun is already creating beads of sweat on your back and a glow arises from the earth.
Grunt, grunt. Snort. Snort! Splash!!
What’s making those noises?
You walk through some brush to try to get closer to the river bank and you see…

"Tribute to Daphne (Sheldrick)"
Private Collection
Original, mixed-media painting on 140 lb Cold-Pressed 100% acid-free cotton rag
20 in. x 13 in. watercolor, gouache and pastel.
This painting is a tribute to Dame Daphne Sheldrick.
Part of the proceeds of its sale were donated to The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
Professionally framed by Prentice Gallery in wood molding, anti-reflective glass and acid-free, mat board.
This is a tribute to Dame Daphne Sheldrick, who died in 2018. She was the matriarch of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) in Kenya. They are, “Best known for their work to protect elephants, the SWT operates the most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world.” It breaks my heart that they get orphaned at all - mostly from the actions of humans.
When she was asked what she admired about elephants,in a 60 minutes interview, she answered, “Their tremendous capacity for caring is, I think, perhaps the most amazing thing about them,” adding, “They have all of the best attributes of us humans and not very many of the bad.”
I felt my heart widen immensely for the animal world after reading, “Elephant Memories: Thirteen Years in the Life of an Animal Family,” by Cynthia Moss. They, and I can see now, all animals are deeply feeling beings. I want to share with you their story and beauty through art like this painting.

The animals we rescue come from hoarding houses, law enforcement seizures, factory farms and slaughterhouse “dead piles” or because they were simply tossed aside as “unwanted”."
The Circle at the origin is
x2 + y2 = r2
It's one of the most beautiful, simple equations for defining a circle, and yet it is based on a triangle and the Pythagorean theorem. In this painting, I wanted to showcase this equation in a perfect setting.

While traveling on a sunny June day, a few years ago, I walked into a spiritual goods store. It was very dark inside; partly because it was so sunny outside and partly because there were no overhead lights inside. I meandered through the circuitous walkways of goods, and halfway through this seemingly endless space, I stepped through a side door to feel the sunlight on my face. The sun shown bright from above and I blinked to realize I was in a courtyard surrounded by statues of Buddha, Vishnu, Kuan Yin and Ganesh. In the center of the yard, the sun reflected up from a pond. Silence
The fish danced round and round the lotus;
the colors and lights mesmerized.

For a few weeks in May, if you hike into the redwoods of Mendocino County, or sometimes drive, you come across something truly breathtaking. The jaguar queen roams the jungles only on the darkest nights, when the moon is on the other side of the earth, playing in the sun. The first humans she saw were the Mayans. They understood her strength and place in the jungle. They feared her power. They worshiped her beauty. As long as she lives, the condor lives.
"Reincarnationem"
Private Collection
22 in. x 30 in. - Unframed
Watercolor and gouache on 300 lb, cold-pressed, acid-free, 100% cotton rag
This is an allegorical painting about both the beauty and the pain of our connections with someone we love. The painting's name is Latin for “Reincarnation,” which I am using metaphorically to represent our desire to reconnect with loved ones or even with ourselves, and how those connections can bridge time and space.
Sometimes I make up a narrative for a painting. For this painting, my story is about a how a young Grizzly Bear's mother died in this location, and how he misses her so much that he returns to the site year after year. On one of those visits, an owl is waiting for him.
About my painting style... I use aura-like outlines to symbolize the energy fields of living beings, and halos for the holy, compassionate spirit of love that life emanates. I also use gold and silver watercolors and gouache as a nod to illuminated manuscripts or Persian paintings of the past. Everything I do in a painting is with the deep hope that it adds to our experience of the beauty and mystery of life.

15 in. x 19 in. Unframed
23-1/4 in. x 27 -1/8 in. Framed
Watercolor and gouache on 300 lb cold-pressed, acid-free, 100% cotton rag
This painting is an allegory of the spirituality of friendship, loyalty and compassion. Subtly painted into the sand and grass are Celtic runes - symbolizing cattle, earth, god, gift, prayers.
The auras around the girl and Highland bull symbolize energy fields of life, and the halos represent the holy, compassionate spirits we all have. I love the word, holy. It has a way of creating a field of silence.
My narrative for this painting is that this young, Scottish girl grew up with a male calf who she named Ian, but now, her parents tell her it's time to send him to slaughter. Since she doesn't have brothers or sisters, Ian was her constant companion, and she played and talked with him each day. She knows killing him doesn't make sense and is wrong so they run away to the sea to catch a ship so they can sail away together.
I named this painting, "Praying for the Earth God," because in many cultures, Ox or cattle, helped man manipulate the earth. Cattle are earthy creatures with gentle souls that are often invisible to us. The little girl is praying for her earth god.
Everything I do in a painting is with the deep hope that it adds to our experience of the beauty and mystery of life.
Professionally framed by Prentice Gallery in wood molding, anti-reflective glass and acid-free, slightly textured, mat board.

The, "Angels," in the title refers to the rhino and the bird spirit watching over the rhino. Have you seen a rhino baby? Adorable times 100! And angelic. And they grow up into the most gentle creatures. I want to share the experience of the awe I have when I see an incredibly gorgeous animal, like a rhino, simply being itself.
About my painting style... I use aura-like outlines to symbolize the energy fields of living beings, and halos for the holy, compassionate spirit of love that life emanates. I also use gold and silver watercolors and gouache as a nod to illuminated manuscripts or Persian paintings of the past. "The Mother"
30 in. x 12 in.
Watercolor and gouache on 300 lb cold-pressed, acid-free, 100% cotton rag
This is an allegorical painting representing the protective, watchful spirit of mothers for their children.
The chemical symbol in this painting represents the type of sugar, lactose, found in the milk of mammals. Why a chemical symbol? Since I have educational backgrounds in engineering, medicine and art, like most artists, I incorporate my life experiences into my paintings. I find theorem derivations or chemical equations to be profound and beautiful.
On a more literal note, I am awed by the female cheetah's ability to stand guard as a sentinel on a hill in the middle of a vast plain with her babies surrounding her, and how she hunts for food for all of them while doing her best to protect them from the larger or more numerous inhabitants of the same territory.
Her task of rearing young to sexual maturity is so vital given they need to continue to genetically diversify since they went through a population bottleneck about 12,000 years ago.
The cheetah is a wonderful symbol of motherhood.
About my painting style... I use aura-like outlines to symbolize the energy fields of living beings. I also use gold watercolors and gouache as a nod to illuminated manuscripts or Persian paintings of the past. Everything I do in a painting is with the deep hope that it adds to our experience of the beauty and mystery of life.

"Long Ago I - His Precious Egg, Accipiter striatus"
Original watercolor and gouache painting (17-1/2 in. x 13-1/8 in.) on 140 lb Cold-Pressed 100% acid-free cotton rag
This painting is part of a series of symbolism paintings with raptors, oversized eggs, snakes and prehistoric imagery. Eggs represent what we hold precious and dear: our children, our loved ones, the earth, and here, they are larger than life to magnify the sense of importance they have to us. The raptor, in this case, a sharp-shinned hawk, Accipiter striatus, is you, me, us —- protecting the egg.
I love the raw and direct beauty of prehistoric paintings. In these paintings, I use a stylistic representation of them to symbolize the fight for survival through the millennia.
About my painting style... there are often aura-like outlines to symbolize energy fields and halos to represent the spirit. Gold and silver watercolors or gouache are my nod to the beautiful illuminated Medieval manuscripts and Persian paintings that have inspired me to want to paint since I was a teenager. Everything I do in a painting is with the deep hope that it evokes in you an experience of the beauty, magic and mystery of life.
